 THE OPPORTUNITY

The Manager, Learning, Well-being & Engagement provides strategic and operational leadership for programs that enhance the employee experience and ensure a safe, healthy, and high-performing workplace. This role oversees three key portfolios — learning and development, employee engagement and well-being (occupational health and safety) — aligning them to the hospital’s mission, values, and strategic priorities.

Reporting to the Director, People and Culture, the Manager , Learning, Well-Being and Engagement plays a pivotal role in building a culture of safety, belonging, and continuous learning. Through partnership with leaders, unions, and employees across the organization, this role ensures that programs and practices support staff development, organizational effectiveness, and the physical and psychological well-being of all team members.

WHAT YOU’LL BE ACCOUNTABLE FOR

Learning & Organizational Development - Purpose: Build the capability, leadership, and organizational effectiveness needed to support a high-performing workforce.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the design, implementation, and evaluation of organizational learning and development programs that build leadership capability, support career growth, and enhance employee performance.
  • Oversee mandatory education programs and learning management systems, ensuring compliance with legislative, regulatory, and accreditation requirements.
  • Partner with clinical and non-clinical leaders to identify learning, team development, and organizational capability needs and implement targeted solutions.
  • Promote a culture of continuous learning and professional development across all employee groups.
  • Lead and support organizational development and change management initiatives that strengthen communication, collaboration, leadership effectiveness, and retention.
  • Serve as a trusted advisor to leaders on learning, leadership development, organizational effectiveness, and workforce development best practices.

Employee Wellness, Safety & Occupational Health - Purpose: Foster a safe, healthy, and supportive workplace that promotes employee well-being and legislative compliance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership and oversight for the hospital's occupational health and safety programs, policies, and initiatives, ensuring compliance with applicable legislation and organizational standards.
  • Oversee workplace injury and illness management, return-to-work programs, and workplace accommodation processes.
  • Support the Health and Safety Office in leading the Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC), ensuring effective communication, follow-up, and continuous improvement of safety practices.
  • Monitor key occupational health, safety, and attendance metrics, ensuring timely reporting and corrective action where required.
  • Lead employee wellness and psychological health initiatives that promote resilience, inclusion, respect, and overall well-being.
  • Act as a resource to leaders on workplace health, safety, disability management, accommodation, and employee well-being.

Employee Engagement & Experience - Purpose: Enhance engagement, culture, recognition, and employee experience to support attraction, retention, and organizational success.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement employee engagement, recognition, and culture initiatives that strengthen the employee experience and reinforce organizational values.
  • Lead the administration, analysis, and action planning of employee engagement and experience surveys, partnering with leaders to implement meaningful improvements.
  • Collaborate with leaders to identify opportunities to improve employee engagement, communication, inclusion, and workplace culture.
  • Support initiatives that promote employee connection, recognition, and a positive workplace environment.
  • Monitor engagement trends and recommend strategies that support retention, organizational culture, and workforce effectiveness.
  • Provide guidance to leaders on engagement best practices and employee experience initiatives.

Leadership & Strategic Contribution (Cross-Functional)

  • Provide day-to-day leadership, coaching, and development to staff.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert and advisor to hospital leadership on learning, organizational development, engagement, wellness, and safety.
  • Contribute to People & Culture strategies and continuous improvement initiatives that advance a healthy, inclusive, engaged, and high-performing workplace.

 Collaboration & Communication

  • Develops and fosters collaborative working relationships across departments, disciplines, and programs to support quality patient care and team effectiveness.
  • Build strong partnerships with physicians, nursing leaders, and interdisciplinary teams to achieve operational and clinical objectives.
  • Facilitates effective communication within clinical teams and across programs to support coordinated patient care and service delivery.
  • Participate in organizational committees, working groups, and initiatives related to patient care, quality, and safety.

Financial & Resource Management

  • Accountable for departmental budget development, monitoring, forecasting, and financial performance.
  • Promotes cost-effective patient care through responsible inventory management and appropriate utilization of surgical supplies, equipment, and resources.
  • Oversees procurement activities and vendor relationships to support operational requirements.
  • Identifies opportunities to improve resource utilization, operational efficiency, and fiscal stewardship.

Human Resources & Team Development

  • Fosters a positive, inclusive, and collaborative work environment aligned with GBGH's mission, vision, and values.
  • Provides coaching, mentorship, performance management, and recognition to support individual and team effectiveness.
  • Supports staff education, competency development, and ongoing professional growth.
  • Ensure staff are appropriately oriented, trained, and supported to meet departmental and organizational objectives.

WHAT YOU BRING

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Organizational Development, Health and Safety, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years of progressive HR experience, with at least 3 years in a leadership or management role.
  • Experience in a hospital environment preferred.
  • Professional certifications such as CHRP/CHRL, CHSC, or equivalent are assets.
  • Strong understanding of Ontario’s Occupational Health and Safety Act and related regulations preferred.
  • Strong understanding of psychological safety concepts.
  • Knowledge of best practices in organizational learning, employee engagement, and wellness.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple priorities and deliver results in a fast-paced, unionized environment.
  • Exceptional interpersonal, facilitation, and communication skills with a collaborative leadership style.
