ABOUT THE ROLE

Sister Margaret Smith Centre is seeking a full-time Addiction Mental Health Counsellor to join the Adult Services team. This position is primarily responsible for providing addiction services to individuals experiencing substance use challenges, often with co-occurring mental health concerns.

This position primarily supports the Men’s Addiction Day Treatment Program, a structured group-based service that provides evidence-informed interventions to individuals in recovery. The counsellor will deliver therapeutic support within a men’s treatment setting serving adult clients with substance use and concurrent mental health concerns. In addition, the counsellor will participate in assessment, stabilization, and case management services, and may also provide support to outpatient and/or live-in treatment programs as needed.

Program Overview

The Men’s Addiction Day Treatment Program provides structured group-based treatment for individuals experiencing substance use challenges. The program focuses on relapse prevention, coping skills, emotional regulation, and recovery planning through evidence-based group interventions. The program prioritizes group-based treatment to maximize access while maintaining clinically appropriate group sizes. Individual support, case management, and referrals to additional services are provided as needed.

Key Responsibilities

  • Facilitate group programming and support the delivery of Day Treatment services
  • Complete assessments, treatment planning, case management, and brief individual counselling support
  • Support clients with co-occurring substance use and mental health concerns
  • Collaborate with internal teams and community partners
  • Contribute to program development and maintain accurate documentation

WHAT YOU BRING

Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor level University degree in Social Work or related discipline
  • Registration with the College of Registered Social Workers (RSW) or equivalent
  • Minimum three (3) years’ clinical experience with adults experiencing substance use challenges
  • Experience in crisis intervention, group facilitation, and case management

 

Skills/Abilities:

  • Demonstrated ability to build therapeutic relationships with men in recovery, including experience addressing issues such as trauma and stigma in group and individual settings
  • Experience in crisis intervention, group facilitation, and case management
  • Knowledge of substance use, harm reduction, mental health, and biopsychosocial care
  • Strong communication, organizational, and computer skills
  • Ability to work independently and within a team
  • Understanding of trauma-informed care, Indigenous cultures, and Northern communities
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a team
  • Demonstrated regular attendance at work

 

Conditions of Employment:

  • This position shall be conditional upon a satisfactory Police Vulnerable Sector Check (PVSC) where indicated, to ensure the absence of relevant criminal convictions.
  • Registered member of Professional College in good standing
  • Will be required to work occasional evening and weekend shifts to meet program needs
  • Valid Ontario driver's license: Class G
