EnvIronmental, Health and Safety Manager – Mining Industry

We are Canada’s newest and only independently owned Iron ore producer with 20 Iron ore deposits in Labrador and Quebec, all within 50 km of the town of Schefferville.

About this Position:

The EnvIronmental, Health and Safety Manager is responsible for establishing, reviewing, improving, implementing and managing envIronmental, health and safety systems, standard operating procedures and protocols.  The manager will serve as a liaison with our other departments, contractors and consultants in ongoing onsite projects and mining activities to ensure the department offers the required EH&S support to attain operational targets and objectives.

This position has a four week rotation.  Two weeks will be at the mine site (5 km from Schefferville, QC) and two weeks at either of our offices in Labrador City or St. Johns.


Accountabilities / Direct


  • Represent our organization by serving as a liaison with Government for permitting matters
  • Manage envIronmental, health & safety and site security employees
  • Establish audit committees and audit systems to ensure site staff follow through with implemented systems
  • Ensure compliance with permits, certificates of approvals, and other regulatory requirements 
  • Report non-compliance and recommend plan of action to GM
  • Coordinate with the Vice President of Sustainable Development, engineers and consultants for development projects and baseline data collection for future projects
  • Conduct field inspections and supervise ongoing work, recommend and encourage responsible envIronmental, health and safety practices to onsite employees
  • Identify potential envIronmental, health and safety risks
  • Perform data management, analysis and reporting for permits, CofAs and legislative requirements
  • Coordinate with the Department of EnvIronment and Conservation, and EnvIronment Canada for maintenance and evaluation of the two onsite Real Time Water Quality Monitoring systems
  • Supervise and support the implementation of all requirements of the Certificate of Approval (C of A) issued by the Newfoundland and Labrador Department of EnvIronment and Conservation and ensure follow-through
  • Conduct EnvIronmental Protection Plan (EPP) orientation
  • Monitor the functioning of the IRS and make recommendations for its improvement.
  • Act as a resource for all employees and the Joint Occupational Health and Safety Committee (JOHSC)
  • Train and/or advise trainers on the safety and health content of training courses

Required Skills / Experience & Abilities

  • Bachelor’s Degree in EnvIronmental Sciences or equivalent
  • College Diploma or Certificate in OHS
  • Canadian Registered Safety Professional Designation, or eligibility to apply would be an asset, however not the main determining factor for the position.
  • Minimum 5-8 years in OHS of which 3 years is with open pit operating mine experience
  • Strong problem solving and communication skills
  • Strong knowledge of the applicable Mining and Safety Acts, Regulations and Codes for  Newfoundland and Labrador
  • Have experience and/or managed with ability to create and monitor the following systems and programs:

    • Occupational Health Safety and EnvIronment Systems
