Frontier Peterbilt Div. Cervus Equipment Corp
Cervus Equipment Corp. of Calgary is buying Saskatchewan-based Frontier Peterbilt Sales Ltd., its four branches and some associated businesses.
The deal covers the Frontier Peterbilt dealerships in Saskatoon, Regina, Estevan and Lloydminster, plus a collision repair centre in Saskatoon, and their sites.
Cervus said in a news release it spent $33 million on the net assets of Frontier Peterbilt, including $14.4 million for land and buildings.
Frontier Peterbilt opened in Saskatoon in 1981 and expanded across the province in the following decades.
It has about 200 full-time employees, its website says.
Cervus CEO Peter Lacey said Tuesday he expects "not much change right now", though he hopes Frontier's branches can hire between 20 and 30 additional technicians.
As well, Cervus could "possibly" consolidate some administrative functions in Calgary, allowing the Saskatchewan branches to "focus on the customer."
Cervus said Frontier reported average gross revenue of $79.3 million per year over the last three years.
Frontier Peterbilt sells new and used trucks, as well as parts and service. It will continue to operate under that name, Cervus's news release said.
Lacey, who formed Cervus with a single dealership in Red Deer in 1982, said his firm has traded on the Toronto Stock Exchange since about 2000, a move taken because of the large amount of capital needed for even a single dealership once land, buildings and inventory are added in.
"It's getting beyond what a couple of individuals can do anymore."
As a result, Cervus employees now own about 36 per cent of the company.
He added that the sale developed because Frontier's owner, approaching 65 years of age and concerned about succession and employees' futures, hired an accounting firm to look for buyers.
With the acquisition, Cervus will have 42 dealerships on the Prairies.
It sells John Deere agricultural equipment, Bobcat and JCB construction equipment; Clark, Sellick, Nissan and Doosan material-handling equipment and Peterbilt transportation equipment.
